What am I listening to?
And other answers to questions no one is asking
A lot of people have been asking me what I’m listening to. What have I been up to? And why haven’t I posted since the first of the year? Like I’ve had hundreds of DMs about what I’m doing in this space.
No one has reached out or done any of those things.
One of my favorite things that content creators do is act like they have people asking questions as a way to bring up things that they want to talk about. Here’s the deal - I’ve been busy and this hasn’t been a super high priority with everything else I’ve had going on. But I’ve missed doing this and I’m popping on to talk briefly about a few things.
I thought this year was going to include some big changes that hasn’t quite turned out yet, but I’ve been taking my time and working on some little things that make me happy. Found myself working on some pretty big projects at work and started doing some gigs again with a buddy. Really enjoying that.
I have a few more gigs on the horizon and a lot of my energy has been working on that sort of stuff. Been playing a lot of Baldur’s Gate 3 still and I was also able to finish Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which continues to be a convoluted and confusing modern era story that I’m in too deep to stop. Truly, that has to be their whole game plan at this point, but that’s a story for another day.
After that, started God of War Ragnarok, which is seeming to already have earned all the praise and awards. Really enjoying stepping into that world this week.
Movies? Thanks for still not asking. Kathleen and I watched Barbie and The Holdovers which were wonderful for completely different reasons. Also, a TON of Moana. But more on that in a minute. Saw Dune 2 yesterday in IMAX which is a sight to behold. Lot of sand and intrigue and all that.
Books? Yeah, I keep thinking about them. Haven’t opened one, though.
I have been listening to music. Really trying to keep records playing so Wylie can grow up having fond memories of using outdated technology.
So, what have we been listening to?
Lots of new good releases. Here’s what I’ve had going:
Standout track: Modern Girl - I know it was a single, but the horns… the energy. Killer track.
Standout track: Queen of the Sea - harmonies and a really good guitar part.
Standout track: Really enjoying No Amazing Grace. I really like flipping around the lyrics to Amazing Grace. Here’s a live version I’ve been enjoying, too.
My standout track on this one is How Far I’ll Go because Wylie is in his Moana era and we’ve been watching it daily. He now will only fall asleep if that song is playing so I think I’m pretty close to being able to perform it in it’s entirety.
Standout Track: Holy Ghost. Probably my favorite song he’s done.
Standout track: Cardinal really grabbed me right off the bat. It kinda feels like it’s bridging that golden hour thing with the 80’s gated snare and guitar motifs. The production on this record is incredible. Can’t wait to dive in more.
Upcoming things I’m excited about:
Look, I feel like this one is scattered and weird, but that’s how I’ve felt this first bit of 2024. So, here’s what projects I’m looking forward to.
Sierra Ferrell is someone I am relatively new to thanks to my sister-in-law1. But Trail of Flowers will be good and I’m excited to get that in a week. Taylor’s The Tortured Poets Department will take up an immense amount of pop culture zeitgeist, but I am also just curious and excited.
Maggie Rogers is always someone I look forward to so Don’t Forget Me will be a ton of fun. I think that’s a month out? *checks* yep. It is. Not going to edit this, either. Stream of consciousness babyyyyy. Also, Novo Amor, a Thought Shedding favorite, has Collapse List dropping in April, too and I am very excited. If anyone wants to donate to get me to the September show in Atlanta, I am taking all sorts off offers since I’ve never seen him and I am very curious what the production looks like live.
Anyway, thanks for reading despite me ignoring a proofread. I do mean it, I really enjoy this space. So, what are you listening to? Looking forward to? There’s a sensitive human on the other end of this little internet space2 and I’d love to hear from you!
Have a great weekend!
SIL also alleges that she gave me Dawes which I can’t confirm so I refuse to give her credit.
just like every other spot on the internet.

1. When are we gonna build your mini board for country gigs? I'll be Tonerangeraudio, you be FakeJauber
2. Cardinals definitely grabbed me when I first listened to the Kacey album. That and Architect feel like they're gonna be the strongest songs off the album. It's growing on me after a few listens and will likely hold up.
3. I need to give the Norah album a listen.
